Our Story
Let Us Breathe Abilene was founded in 2020 by two local bondswomen, in response to the national reckoning on racial injustice following the death of George Floyd. Our firsthand experiences with systemic inequities in the justice system inspired us to create a platform for change in Abilene.
The organization began as a grassroots effort to address racial disparities and promote social justice within the community. Let Us Breathe Abilene has organized events such as Juneteenth celebrations, protests, Black History Month events, Fresh Kicks/Fresh Start back to school program, and Community Advocacy program. They have also worked to improve local spaces like Stevenson Park, advocating for amenities like suitable bathrooms, lights, and new basketball and tennis courts to better serve the community.
Despite facing challenges, Let Us Breathe Abilene emphasizes the organization’s resilience.
Today, Let Us Breathe Abilene continues its mission to advocate for empowerment, equality, and justice through education and community partnerships. Their ongoing efforts aim to create a more inclusive and equitable environment for all residents of Abilene.
